 Ozempic® (semaglutide) is a once-weekly injectable medication used to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. It belongs to a class of drugs known as GLP-1 receptor agonists, which help the body regulate blood sugar, enhance insulin production, and reduce appetite.

The 0.25 mg dose is specifically designed as the starting dose for new patients. It is not intended for long-term maintenance but rather to allow the body to gradually adjust to semaglutide and reduce the risk of gastrointestinal side effects.

How It Works:
Semaglutide mimics the body’s natural GLP-1 hormone, stimulating insulin release in response to high blood sugar and suppressing glucagon secretion. It also slows gastric emptying, helping to control appetite and support weight loss in some individuals.

Dosage and Administration:
Each prefilled pen delivers 0.25 mg of semaglutide once weekly. The pen contains multiple doses and is used over 4 weeks. Injections are administered subcutaneously into the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm, on the same day each week, with or without meals. After four weeks, patients are typically transitioned to the 0.5 mg dose as part of their titration schedule.

Storage:
Store Ozempic pens in the refrigerator between 36°F and 46°F (2°C to 8°C) until first use. After first use, it can be kept refrigerated or at room temperature (not above 86°F or 30°C) for up to 56 days. Do not freeze.

Important Safety Information:
Ozempic is not recommended for use in people with type 1 diabetes or as first-line treatment for type 2 diabetes. It should not be used by patients with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or MEN 2. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and decreased appetite. Serious risks include pancreatitis, kidney problems, gallbladder disease, and potential thyroid tumors.

Clinical Note:
The 0.25 mg pen is not a therapeutic dose. It is strictly for dose initiation and is followed by increased doses (typically 0.5 mg and 1 mg) based on patient response and treatment goals.
